It's a significant moment for the party and an important affirmation of its commitment to democratic principles, writes the NDP MP for Hamilton Centre

I am encouraged by a recent decision of the Ontario NDP executive to uphold the party’s constitutional processes for candidate nominations.

The party executive has decided to provide Sarah Jama, the current independent member of provincial parliament for Hamilton Centre, with the documentation needed for her to seek the NDP nomination in her riding. By declaring that all members of the riding in good standing are eligible to receive and submit a nomination package, the Ontario NDP executive has demonstrated their deep commitment to upholding the democratic processes that are the foundation of our movement.

Democratic Processes Matter

At its core, democracy within our party means that no member is excluded from participating in decisions that shape our collective future. Sarah Jama’s request for a nomination package is an exercise of this fundamental right. As the previously elected MPP, Sarah remained an NDP member in good standing despite her removal from the caucus, and her reapplication for an Ontario NDP nomination strengthens our party’s democratic fabric and ensures that the voices of Hamilton Centre residents are fully heard and accounted for.

This decision also underscores that our party constitution is more than a set of rules; it reflects our shared commitment to fairness. The Ontario NDP has shown that we are a party where members’ rights are respected and decisions are made with accountability. This is the kind of leadership that builds trust and inspires confidence, not only within our party but also among voters and sends a clear message to Ontarians that we are ready to lead with integrity.

A Commitment to Hamilton Centre

As the federal member of Parliament for Hamilton Centre, I have seen the impact that the removal of MPP Jama from the Ontario NDP caucus has had on our community. Many residents have expressed concerns about whether their voices are being heard and whether their representation is being prioritized. This decision by the Ontario NDP executive is a positive step toward rebuilding that trust.

Hamilton Centre is a community with pressing needs of affordable housing, access to health care, better wages, and a sustainable economy. These are the issues that must remain at the forefront of our work. With this reaffirmation of democratic principles, I am hopeful we can refocus on addressing these challenges together.

Looking Ahead

While the events leading up to this decision have sparked meaningful debate, this is not just about one individual or one riding; it is about ensuring that our party operates with integrity, respecting the voices and rights of all its members.

With the resignation of the prime minister, the prorogation of our federal Parliament, and the possibility of a provincial snap election looming, this decision offers an opportunity for us to come together as a party and reaffirm our shared commitment to democracy. It reminds us that fairness and accountability must guide our actions, not only in how we treat one another but also in how we serve the people of Ontario.

We must continuously strive to ensure that our internal structures reflect the broader principles of justice and equity that we champion. By doing so, we strengthen not only our party but also our ability to build a more just and equitable society.

The Ontario NDP executive’s leadership in upholding democratic principles is a cause for optimism. It shows that when we respect our processes and treat each other with fairness, we are not only honouring our constitution but that an Ontario NDP led by Marit Stiles is also preparing to lead our province with the integrity and accountability that people deserve. Together, we can build a stronger Ontario rooted in trust, justice, and hope.

Matthew Green is the MP for Hamilton Centre and a New Democrat.
