Welcome to a special edition of Trillium Talk, your must-see briefing from Village Media’s team of journalists at the Ontario Legislature.
Although this segment usually runs on Sunday mornings, we're ramping things up now that a provincial election has been set for Feb. 27.
Every weekday during the campaign, Village Media's Scott Sexsmith will sit down with one of our staffers at The Trillium to talk about the big developments of the day.
On the show today is reporter Charlie Pinkerton, part of The Trillium team that broke the news this morning about a $2-million fraud lawsuit filed against two former Ford government staffers — including a central figure in the Greenbelt scandal.
The statement of claim alleges the two ex-staffers — Ryan Amato and Shiv Raj — were paid to use “their backchannel contacts and political connections” to get land rezoned for development, but did not follow through on the deal.
Both deny the allegations, saying the lawsuit “contains false and baseless accusations.”
At a press conference this afternoon in Ottawa, PC Leader Doug Ford was asked about the lawsuit. But he was also peppered about something else: a hot mic moment during a previous campaign stop, where he was recorded telling people he was "100 per cent" happy Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election.
Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie has already turned around an election ad based on the clip of Ford's comments.
Pinkerton joins us to break it all down. Check out our site later this afternoon for a full wrap of today's news from the campaign trail.
