Welcome to The Trillium, where all politics is local.
Launched this morning by Village Media, a leader in hyperlocal journalism, The Trillium is a comprehensive news and information website devoted exclusively to in-depth, insider coverage of politics and policy at the Ontario Legislature.
Led by Editor-in-Chief Jessica Smith Cross, The Trillium boasts a talented roster of experienced Queen’s Park journalists, including Deputy Editor Charlie Pinkerton and reporters Aidan Chamandy, Sneh Duggal and Jack Hauen.
Passionate and plugged in, The Trillium team will be your eyes and ears at the Legislative Assembly, delivering the major political headlines of the day while unpacking complex policy changes and digging deeper into key issues that impact every Ontarian. Our dogged journalists will also keep a close watch on legislative debates, question period, public appointments, lobbying activity and regulatory proposals.
“This is a very exciting day for us,” says Jeff Elgie, the CEO of Village Media. “Queen’s Park is the heart of power in Ontario, and what happens there has a ripple effect on every community in the province, including the many cities and towns that depend on our local journalism.”
Born digital, Village Media owns and operates 24 news websites across Ontario, including GuelphToday, SooToday, BarrieToday, Sudbury.com and BurlingtonToday. Our award-winning reporters and editors are committed to strengthening the communities they serve by providing free, reliable, up-to-the-minute coverage of the stories that matter most: the ones closest to home.
“I love local news and I love provincial politics. I couldn’t be more excited to bring the two together with The Trillium,” says Smith Cross. “Queen’s Park often feels like a small town and each member of our team is a true local.”
The Trillium is a subscription-based news service designed especially for Queen’s Park stakeholders, including public servants, political staffers, business leaders, lobbyists and strategists. But for a limited time, the website will be free and accessible to everyone, allowing readers across the province to sample The Trillium’s top-notch political reporting and analysis.
“Village Media, with its strong track record as an independent news organization, is a perfect fit for our team of fiercely independent journalists,” Smith Cross says.
Along with full access to The Trillium’s website, subscribers will receive exclusive must-read newsletters delivered to their inbox every Monday to Friday. Our newsletters include “The Trillium Today” first thing in the morning, “The Trillium Wrap” every afternoon, and “The Weekender,” a Friday afternoon recap of the week. The team will also produce a weekly podcast — “The Trill” — featuring frank, extensive discussions with the people influencing provincial legislation.
“High-quality journalism is crucial to a healthy democracy, and we see that on display every day in the local communities we serve,” says Michael Friscolanti, the Editor-in-Chief of Village Media. “Expanding to Queen’s Park will only raise the quality of our reporting — not just for subscribers of The Trillium, but for readers across the Village network.”
Be sure to follow The Trillium on Facebook and Twitter. And if you haven’t yet, please sign up for our newsletters, which will remain free to everyone for a limited time only.
