A trio of New Democrats who recently left provincial politics to seek federal office have lost.
A number of MPPs have left the provincial legislature over the last few years to seek office federally. Here’s how they did on election night:
- Joel Harden, first elected in Ottawa Centre in 2018, announced he would be running federally in 2024. He lost to Liberal incumbent Yasir Naqvi.
- Monique Taylor was first elected in 2011 in Hamilton Mountain. She lost to Liberal candidate Lisa Hepfner.
- Bhutila Karpoche was first elected in the riding of Parkdale—High Park in 2018 and decided in September that she would be trying to run federally in Taiaiako’n–Parkdale—High Park. She came second to Liberal candidate Karim Bardeesy.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, also a former MPP, lost his seat as well. He will stay on as leader until a new one is chosen.
Conservative Parm Gill represented the riding of Milton between 2018 and 2024. He stepped down to run for MP in Milton East—Halton Hills South. Gill managed to secure the seat with over 48 per cent of the vote.
Roman Baber was an MPP for York Centre between 2018 and 2022, when he tried his hand at running for leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, a race he lost to Pierre Poilievre. He also won.
He was ousted from the PC party over his opposition to Ontario’s COVID-19 restrictions.
