Multiculturalism Minister Michael Ford is taking a leave of absence from cabinet for his health and wellbeing, he announced Friday.

Ford, the premier's nephew, was first elected in 2022 at age 28 and immediately named to cabinet.

“Earlier today, I spoke with the Premier and informed him of my decision to take a leave of absence from my Cabinet responsibilities as Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, effective immediately," he said Friday.

"This decision was made after much thought, and while it weighs very heavily on me, it is necessary for me to prioritize my health and well-being over the next couple of months. I appreciate his support and that of the residents of York-South Weston in making this difficult decision, and I look forward to returning to Queen's Park in the near future.”

Before coming to Queen's Park, Micheal Ford was a Toronto city councillor. He ran in the 2016 byelection to fill the seat of former mayor Rob Ford — his uncle, and the premier's brother — when he passed away.
