York Region is officially welcoming its new chair as Eric Jolliffe stepped into the role Jan. 1.
The provincial government appointed the former York Regional Police chief to the position last month, following the retirement of Wayne Emmerson. Jolliffe spent three decades in law enforcement, implementing “innovative community policing strategies and fostering strong relationships," the region said.
Jolliffe said he is honoured to serve the community in this new capacity.
“I look forward to collaborating with council members, staff, and residents to build upon the region's strengths and address the important work that lies ahead,” Jolliffe said in a news release. “Together, we will strive to enhance the quality of life for all our residents and ensure our region remains a vibrant and prosperous place to live, work, and raise a family."
The move came with some controversy, with several York Region councillors opposed to the province appointing the chair position, traditionally decided by a vote of council. Other councillors believe the position should be elected at large by the populace. However, other councillors also expressed confidence in Jolliffe, who spent years working alongside council members while at the head of the police force, though he has never served in political office.
In his new capacity, Jolliffe will be responsible for overseeing the region’s strategic direction, managing council meetings and working closely with council members to address key issues.
“Mr. Jolliffe’s extensive experience in leadership and public service will be invaluable as we work together to enhance economic prosperity, support community well-being, and drive sustainable development across the region,” Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Paul Calandra said in a news release. “I look forward to collaborating with him and the regional council."
Jolliffe spent a decade as York Regional Police chief from 2010 to 2020 before retiring. His accolades include the Governor General’s Order of Merit of the Police, the Order of the City of Vaughan and both the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond and Golden Jubilee medals. He holds a master’s degree in leadership from Royal Roads University and has a certified municipal manager designation.
"Eric Jolliffe's appointment as the new chair of York Region is a testament to his exceptional leadership and deep commitment to our community,” CAO Erin Mahoney said in a news release. “His extensive experience and proven track record in public service will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and prosperity of York Region, and we look forward to supporting his vision for our future."
The region extended its gratitude to outgoing chair Emmerson, who was celebrated in his final meeting as regional chair.
