Timmins is sending its condolences to the Sault Ste. Marie community following a tragic murder-suicide that took the lives of three children.

At the start of the Timmins council meeting last night (Oct. 24), Mayor Michelle Boileau extended condolences to the family and friends of the victims of the Oct. 23 tragedy. She also called on the Ontario government to declare intimate partner violence an epidemic.

Late Monday night, there were a series of shootings at two homes in Sault Ste. Marie. Three children — a six-year-old, seven-year-old and 12-year-old — were killed. A 41-year-old adult victim also died, as did the 44-year-old shooter. Police say it's the result of intimate partner violence.

“The loss of life is unnecessary, the act of violence egregious. We implore the Ontario government to reconsider and recognize the devastating impact of intimate partner violence as epidemic. As a community, we must ensure that no one feels alone or is left unheard. If you or someone you know is a victim of intimate partner violence, please know that there are local resources and supports available to help and please reach out,” said Boileau.

The City of Timmins has taken official steps to recognize the issue of intimate partner violence.

At the Oct. 3 council meeting, resolution was passed that declares that intimate partner violence and violence against women are an epidemic.

It also called for the city to integrate intimate partner violence into the community safety and well-being plan.
