Mapleview mystery? Speculation abounds around south-end building

While social-media chatter proclaims site to be myriad of things, the truth is far less exciting ... at least for now

A large mystery building rises toward the sky at 90 Mapleview Dr. W., in Barrie's south end.

If you've driven along Mapleview Drive West any time over the last few months, you may have noticed a rather large, imposing building under construction.

Its giant steel beams tower over the neighbouring businesses in south-end Barrie.

Social-media chatter has been churning out all kinds of assumptions as to what will be calling the property at 90 Mapleview Dr. W. home.

"It's def a Metro, bids just got turned in today for it," speculated one Facebook user.

The most tossed around guess, or hope, and ill-informed assumption is it will be a Longo’s grocery store.

Seems a bit on the large side for it to be that.

Other “know-it-alls” proclaimed the site to be an IKEA store, an Amazon distribution centre — complete with delivery drones to swarm the city’s airspace. Or perhaps the new YMCA.

However, the new YMCA facility will be located at 535 Bayview Dr., adjacent to the Sadlon Arena, just off Mapleview Drive East on the other side of Highway 400.

Close, but no cigar.

Other social media enthusiasts turned to humour with their guesses as to what will be at the site.

“New weed plant,” said one.

“It's the city of Barrie's new tax office. They need a building big enough to hold all our taxes,” quipped another.

The fact is no one knows, as it happens to still be available for lease with no tenant signed on yet.

“This is a warehouse property that is available for lease,” said Andy Suhr, a vice-president with Jones Lang LaSalle, the real estate agency listing the property.

“There are no designated tenants for the building yet,” he added.

Mystery solved ... for now.

Although, it seems one online commentator may have hit the nail on the head: “A larger rumour mill. The one we have is too small,” they wrote.
