Cutting costs isn’t coming easy to Burlington council

Committee members are in a marathon session to find savings in 2024 budget

It doesn’t look like Burlington's politicians are having much success in finding cuts to the city's budget.

Councillors are in the midst of a marathon multi-day session to debate suggested cuts during the corporate services, strategy, risk and accountability budget committee.

Several hours into the process, they’ve found $38,000 in savings by eliminating additional staffing for the community gardens project.

That doesn’t come close to the $4.5 million required to shave one per cent off the proposed tax increase, the committee heard.

Halton Region approved an increase in its budget last week that affects local taxpayers who are now looking at an overall tax increase of more than 6.68 per cent.

Burlington councillors are going over a list of more than 55 items to look for savings. The items on the list were put forward by various city councillors.

You can find the summary of the budget motions and who suggested them on the city website
